According to reporter Erin Miller, four independent scientists say “they see no impact from freshwater pumping on resources within the Kaloko-Honokahau National Historical Park.”  Former state Department of Land and Natural Resources chairman Peter Young said Saturday the studies were undertaken to gauge how fresh water demand would affect the Keauhou Aquifer, which differed considerably from “the situation that faced Maui‘s Iao aquifer.” Young told a Rotary Club of Kona meeting that the draw on freshwater reserves on the Keauhou Aquifer is well below 50 percent of sustainable yield, where the draw on the Iao Aquifer is more than 90 percent of sustainable yield. Young said The Water Commission “must look at scientific analysis to see if water quality and quantity are being impacted by the current water users.”  A National Park Service hydrologist had earlier mentioned that she didn’t yet see a negative impact on park resources.  Park officials are concerned that drawing down the fresh water reserve could change the salinity of nearshore water, which in turn could have a negative effect on fish and other marine life.  Aloha, Russ.
